We’ve sorted them into ‘individuals’ and ‘organisations’ – check them all out!

Individuals

I graduated as a zoologist and have since been catapulted into the world of conservation. After being attached to an assortment of research projects, I eventually drifted towards marine conservation. Of particular interest to me are sharks. Whilst working in the Maldives in 2008 I co-founded a whale shark monitoring project, and I continue to be involved with shark conservation throughout the archipelago.

After studying zoology at Liverpool University I set up the production company Right Choice Media. The main goal of the company is to create films which make people aware of conservation work and inspired to become involved with projects at local and national levels. On a lighter note we occasionally produce short, silly films for the ‘Under Water Over Land’ contest as a way of letting our hair down. My main research interests focus on how to increase societies perceived importance of conservation and promote environmental awareness to children. When have some free time I can usually be found surfing, taking photographs or hitchhiking around small tropical countries against the Foreign Office’s recommendations.

I’m doing a PhD in community phylogenetics (a posh way of saying I look at how communities of species assemble and interact with each other) at Imperial College London. I’m generally interested in conservation issues, particularly how the way science is communicated seems to be making more trouble for us than it should be. Much of the technical side of Conservation Today is my doing, and I run the site with Felix Whitton.

Felix began life as a budding entomologist, but quickly realised that you can’t get anywhere in life by loving insects that much. He still has a sneaking regard for all things critter-ish, but now spends his time day-dreaming of visiting far-flung places while studying for a Masters. He has worked in Africa, Madagascar and Central Asia, and sees life after university as a kind of extended holiday involving natural history.
